Case Studies (1) - Anaylising Music Video

'Post To Be' - Omarion Ft Chris Brown & Jhene Aiko

This is  the first video that I have analysed for this case study, 'Post To Be' by Omarion featuring Chris Brown and Jhene Aiko. The genre of the track is R&B and Pop, it involves 3 artist performing, all the artist in the video come from the same background genre of music. Below is the tracks single cover,  made the artists into cartoons as the songs genre it differentiates itself from music in that category of songs today. Also, that their attracting the attention of new audience which are young adults and teenagers.

All the artist are dancing, 2 of the male singers are dancing solo and the girl is dancing as well. I that through the lyrics there is in some extent a narrative story but also on themselves for instance their style and life.

 Narrative & Concept

From the opening lyrics of the track, " If your chick come close to me, She ain't going home where she post to be."  Already tells the narrative of the story from which the audience can notify also as this verse is related often throughout the song. then followed on is, "I'm getting money like I'm Post to Be, I'm getting money like I'm Post to Be." this shows that the song goes to different topics meaning there isn't really a narrative as if there was it would stick to the subject of the 'chick' coming close to him and not being where she's supposed to me which is with her boyfriend or lover.

However, I have price in some of the lyrics that the topic it most focuses on his sex. Not surprising as most successful R&B tracks today are usually on the discussion of sex. This video is therefore performance based as the surrounding, directed in a white backdrop with just the three artists performing as they would do in a concert.

Camera Angles & Shots

I think that this video is very a like to the other R&B music videos performance based today as for instance, the dancing and the car ( Ferrari).

The dancing makes the song more enjoyable to the viewer and listener and the car shows a sign of wealth as most artists feature cars in their video. But also that it was featured through the lines of, " she about to ride out with me" and also short clips of the car inside and out.

The opening scene of the video, is of the three artists standing in a line and from a very long shot, to long shot and then to a medium shot angle. This was according to the beat at the beginning, 3 beats to match 3 shots.

This is something I can take into consideration for my music video, makes the video flow very nicely matching the beat that hits in the song to shot.

Very long shots were used for this video, I think this was because of the amount of people in the song.

But also that the space in which this video was filmed in is large, wanted to show that and most of the artists were dancing so it would of been much clearer to see them dancing in this angle.

Beside, is of the medium close up used on the lines of, " these chicks before everybody".
This  below, was the only extreme close up shot in the video that I've seen. this comes on the lines, " your chick".I think that this was used to add an extremely close up shot into the video, considering the fact that the video uses a lot of very long shots throughout the song.

High shot angle was also used in the video in the lines of, " But I had her screaming, oohh."  This was used to relate towards the sound "oohh"This is something that I can add towards my music video for instance the bridge part of the song or gap in the song when it's only instrumental I can film a bird's eye view of something like the sky or buildings.

Effects
These mirroring effects were often used in the video of the nude model painted in gold. this is done using a medium close up shot.  Models are often used in music videos, this model is used for symbolism in the topic of wealth. The colour gold representing money and luxury and it pouring down on her ( the gold paint) could suggest that more money coming their way.

This link with the repetition of the lines, " I'm getting money like I'm post to be, I'm getting money like I'm post to be." This suggests that the song has an economical theme.

However, considering the fact that the model is nude, it also links with the song having the topic of sex.
Most of the close up shots are of objects such as, a typewriter. But to add more colour to the video they've used to it's seems to be paint in the colours of red, blue and white pouring on the machine.

This is interesting and somewhat used in many other videos to add something else to the video, kind of like art. This is also showing a mirroring effect, to differentiate the video a bit more making the more seem creative.
Misc- En- Scene

The wardrobe for the video was very urban and in relation to its genre. The male artists wore 2 to 3 different outfits in the video compared to the female artist only wearing one. The main artist, Omarion wore 3 outfits in the video, 2 being very urban and the other being classy and sophisticated in use of a hat themed from 50s.
Both of the male artists wore a pair of Timberland boots. Timberland boots are very common in the fashion industry for male celebrities today but also people in general and most their target audience.

So I do think that by them wearing the same boots and these boots in particular was to grab the attention of the audience and usually music videos are known for their fashion , like what the artist is wearing and if they can be able to buy the same wear.

Here is an image to one of Chris Brown's outfits in the video.  this outfit in particular has an effect to the video. As the video is based in a wide white backdrop, this bright colour red shirt adds more colour into the video considering the fact that most of the artists outfits are black.

Also that most of the young adults today would be seen wearing this outfit so its in relation to what their audience would wear today as fashion is changing.

Jhene Aiko, as the only female in this track, I think that her outfit is under the influence of the men in the video.

This is what young girls today admire, female artists in urban wear. I think by her only having one outfit for the video is not a good idea as she is the only female and most of her female mans would want to see more out of her and what she wear.

However, I think that the outfit is also in relation to what they would wear because, most female artists would wear expensive and luxurious clothing from well known designers. But she chose to wear this to show them that they can also buy the same outfit of clothing as it is very basic yet stylish.

And also because she only has one verse in the song she wouldn't really need to have another outfit. For Chris Brown's case he sings in the chorus and has a verse of his own so it would be logical for him to appear more in a different outfit.

In conclusion, this video has been an inspiration towards my music video that I'll be soon shooting. From the camera angles and to wardrobe in relation towards its audience has given me an insight on what I could do to my video to relate very well to its genre and be in an interests towards its targeted audience.

  1. Sarah, some useful analysis here and you have used images to illustrate ideas. You cover quite a lot, the structure could be clearer, using headings to break down camera, mise-en-scene, editing and also the other points on the brief. Also be sure to proof read your work.
